She spreads out the quilt on the cold ground, the graves were on a small hill facing East, she sat down and looked around, mostly only seeing other headstones, the trees surrounding the cemetery and the road. She listened to the birds and watched a nearby butterfly flying near and then land on the top her Dad’s stone.
Sitting with her newly tattooed leg stretching out and her right leg bent inside so that she could write, talking aloud to him about her accomplishments and sorrows with tears in her eyes, she felt like someone was watching her, but she didn’t see anyone around, the presence didn’t scare her though. While remained sitting, she picks up her phone to take pics of his stone while in that position, that way she can look at them and feel like she is there at any time.
When focusing, she noticed something in the distance near the trees to the left of his stone, she zoomed in more on it to see what it was, thought maybe it was just a statue, but no, it was a big, gorgeous gold and red wolf, just sitting there watching her, as if he had been waiting for her to look at him, she snapped a couple of pics before he got spooked and ran off. She put the phone down, not taking her eyes off of the wolf, then she was locked into his amber eyes, neither one moving or afraid of the other, his thick coat reminded her of the beautiful multi-colored rock canyons she has seen in photos. She felt like she knew him somehow and was engulfed in love. But how is that possible? It seemed like time stood still. Then she thought she heard someone say something like Ma, but when looking around, nobody was there, when seeking out the wolf again, he was gone, leaving as silently as his approach, or was he already there when she arrived. She couldn’t believe what just happened, how freakin awesome was that! She stayed a little bit longer, needing to hit the road and get home. She kept searching for the wolf as she got into her car, but didn’t see him, that was just a fluke, right, however powerful it was on her. But as she neared the road, she heard a wolf howl, she managed to slam the gear in Park and jumped out of her car, frantically searching but didn’t see him.
Ama had named him, Canyon, even if she didn’t realize it. That was the first time he tried to communicate with her, she obviously heard him but didn’t know it was him, but it’s still a good sign. He could hear her mournful thoughts of her Sire, her turmoil and what made her happy, he has always tried to comfort her from afar. His silent howl was only meant to be heard by her. He knows she is heading home and will have a safe trip, he’ll travel back to be near her den when darkness falls.
