Leasing Office Error

This whole intolerance had gotten so bad that I filed a complaint on bbb.org, which I had never done before and is below with remitting the name of the complex and other information since it was eventually settled & I am still living there wanting to keep the peace.

When I submitted my lease deposits the young girl who was handling my lease stated that I could either write 2 separate checks for the deposit & first month’s rent or combine the amounts onto one check, I chose the latter, which was accepted & went through my bank account the following week. Two weeks later, the leasing office calls to inform me that 2 separate checks should have been written and they don’t have the capability to transfer funds from their accounts & it was my understanding that they would credit my first check of $1,320 & then I would resubmit the 2 separate checks. I assumed they figured how to transfer funds since they had not credited my first check, but another two weeks passed, a month after moving in, I received another call from the leasing office stating that it shows that I did not pay it & that I could face eviction & that I needed to submit the 2 separate checks asap, which was understood that they would not go through until after they credited back my first check, I put the revised checks in the drop box that night which I had included a note stating everything which I also emailed to the management company. Needless to say the revised checks went through but I was yet credited or refunded in any way for the first check, causing my checking account to be overdrawn due to ACH’s going through, getting hit with OD fees & unable to pay other bills. I’m on a tight budget, which includes helping my 73 year old mother who is on social security. I had to sacrifice a much needed doctor’s appointment in order to take my sick dog to the vet. I have worked at a well known local bank for 20 years, so I don’t understand why they cannot figure out how to transfer funds or refund me what they owe. I have gone back & forth with management company, who always responds with that they are working on it. So as far as I’m concerned, my whole lease was been majorly mishandled. I’ve lived in apartments before & never had or heard of anyone having this problem. I chose that apartment complex because it was perfect for my current needs when selling my house in Tulsa, which I only received enough to pay for deposits, catching up on bills & getting needed items for my apartment. I don’t know how long I will live there, but I prefer to live in peace.

On the day that I submitted the BBB complaint, the management company requested that I provide my bank statement as proof that I did not receive the reimbursement. First of all, I shouldn’t have had to jump through so many hoops to accommodate them when it was their fault by whatever means in the first place. Secondly, that is a violation of my privacy. Finally, two days later, a check was available at the leasing office for my behalf, which did include the initial first deposit amount and all of my OD fees. During the whole ordeal I had gotten discouraged about unpacking and could finally finish doing so and be happy about living at the complex and settle into my new home for however long I live here.

So in a sharing conclusion, if you ever need to make an apartment deposit & they mention the option of providing 2 separate checks, by all means, write 2 checks, even if you hate writing checks.
